rambling

rambling
Rambling has been a popular activity throughout this century, although numbers have risen significantly as leisure time and car ownership have increased. The Rambler’s Association, which was formed in 1931, represents the rights of walkers, protecting rights of way and campaigning for the freedom to roam over uncultivated open country. Successful campaigns have led to the passing of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 and the inclusion of rights of way on popular Ordnance Survey maps. Several rambling ‘personalities’ have developed over more recent years; perhaps most famously Alfred Wainwright, who first started producing guide books covering walks in the Lake District in the 1950s and 1960s.
